Skincare products are so amazing right now! I remember when I was first starting off looking after my teenager skin and there was hardly anything! I went through nearly every brand that was available in boots- some were great. Some, not so much. I just wanted to find the perfect first skincare routine.
Now in my late twenties, I finally accept that I have found the products that work perfectly for me. And whilst I may have a go with a few different things, my core skincare products remain the same. You may say I’m scared to be adventurous. Afterall, it’s my face and the problems that I’ve had with it in the past (including one high-street brand giving my burn like marks near my eyes), you can see why I’m scared to venture out.
When I was first introduced to The Ordinary, I was sceptical but intrigued. This was very much a brand that was not flashy. They stuck to the core of what their products were good and that their customers would be their cheerleaders. The appeal is that their product is good quality but affordable. The most expensive product is £12.00. You can see why I was sceptical.
This adventure with this brand turned into a love affair, as I adore this brand. Their products are really good. Their products are affordable. What is there not to love? When I’m introduced to a brand like this, I often wish this was around when I was a teenager. Because it works, it’s stylish and cost-effective- I feel this is the ideal skincare for someone who is first starting off.
I am no expert when it comes to skincare, but I like to think I have some knowledge on what works for dry skin. For oily skin, please still read this article but feel free to amend to you. In fact, anyone can amend this to them. But I think of this in a way of if I had a daughter, this is what I would buy her as her first ever skincare routine.
Whilst The Ordinary don’t do a face wash- there are some great ones that you can pick up on the high-street. A good mild face wash is an essential when you are young, if not to just get rid of the impurities out of your skin. The next thing is a good toner. The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution is in my words even better than the Pixi Glow Tonic. It is so light and refreshing, with the tiniest exfoliation on the skin. The aloe vera is so calming on the skin, which is perfect for troubling skin.
Next is to apply some oils that are really going to benefit your skin. One thing I would insist on being used every day is The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5. This stuff is a godsend for dry skin and so cheap! £6.00 for a hyaluronic acid!!! My skin feels ten times better once I’ve used this stuff and I’ve got so many bottles on standby when this runs out.
The next thing I would recommend using is The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG. It’s a great under-eye treatment that really wakes my eyes up. Plus it’s got caffeine in it- what’s there not to love about coffee? For an extra treat, I love putting it in the fridge so the gel is super cold on my under-eyes to really wake up my eyes. Finally, you need a lovely moisturizer. The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA is a super affordable moisturizer but so enriching on the skin. The formula is none-greasy which means you get the hydration you need without your skin feeling heavy.
The Little Extras
This brand also offers amazing extra products that your skin would very much benefit from. My favourite has to be The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%, which is filled with Vitamin C that is so brightening on the skin. Something I would advise to use every now and then when the skin needed it- perhaps when heading to a special event such as a friend’s wedding or a party. When you are young, you don’t need it all the time when your skin is still young, but I think it’s nice to have a special to make your skin feel amazing.
This next product is a definite investment product, because for what it is- it’s an absolute bargain! This The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil is only £6.00 which is unheard of for a Moroccan Oil. This can be used on both the hair and skin, so you can look fabulous from top to bottom.
Another great product is The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. The 10-minute exfoliating facial is great for giving your skin a new lease of life. Its formula gives you brighter, more even skin. Perfect to use as a first time exfoliating mask when you are first starting to look after your skin.
Finally, we move away from skincare and onto makeup. I’m not a mother, but even if I was- it’s not my place to tell you when is the right age to let your child wear makeup. Personally, I didn’t wear foundation until I was in my early twenties but if my daughter wanted to wear it much sooner, as long as it was for the right reasons- I wouldn’t stop her.
The only thing I would insist on was being part of choosing the right one for her. The Ordinary Serum Foundation SPF is ideal for young skin. It provides a semi-matte coverage, just enough coverage to provide confidence but isn’t going to clog up the skin. There are also 21 shades available which mean every skin colour is covered.

Some The Ordinary products were gifted to me, but the majority were brought out of my own pennies. All the hints, tips and love for the brand are my own!
